2ShareOurRide invites you to explore this lesser known “Mosquito” Road Ride (MRR) near Placerville California. An important distinction to note — this is NOT “Mosquito Ridge Road” near Foresthill which is also fun but has been closed most of the 2017 season.
MRR is a 93 mile, paved highway ride suitable for all types of road legal motorcycles. The route, while short and all highway, will provide advanced challenges for motorcyclists. Mosquito Road heading out of Placerville quickly becomes VERY narrow with deep, blind curves and gentle vertical ascents and descents. Riders must be skilled at making slow, sharp turns.
And, remember to stay safe and follow the rule to RIDE RIGHT, STAY RIGHT. The road does support residential housing and riders will encounter oncoming traffic. The white wooden bridge across the American River is extremely narrow and allows for passage of vehicles only one at a time. A loaded motorcycle with panniers will find exceptional challenge in keeping straight along the longitudinal tracks without touching the bridge railings.
Breakfast and gasoline are available at the start of the ride on Sunrise Blvd in Rancho Cordova, or off Main Street in Placerville. The town of Coloma offers pit stops for lunch or coffee as well as photo opps of the American River, Parks, Museums and historic gold mining sites.
The mapped route along Luneman Road and Jurgens Rd. presents a water crossing that can be perilous with white water, green slippery algae, and mud, depending on the seasonal rain or spring snow melt. An alternate course would be to NOT take the left turn at Lotus Road. Instead, stay straight on Hwy 49 a few more miles to Salmon Falls Rd. Turn left on Salmon Falls and enjoy the winding curves as you travel south and return to the mapped route on Green Valley Road.
Ride time can take between 3 to 5 hours depending on pit stops, lunch, or photo shoots.
